Cook-Kirwan Cup Winners

May saw the conclusion of the inaugural Cook-Kirwan Cup – a mixed doubles handicap tournament designed by Paul Cook and Mel Kirwan, two of our more interesting members. The tournament was devised in autumn of 2020, to be played over the winter in the absence of any other competitive tennis opportunities. Of course the original plan was scuppered by the November and January - March lockdowns so the tournament was played in a short form with any teams who'd managed to fit matches in between the two lockdowns progressed to a knock-out stage.
The final between Ali Burd & Michael O’Grady and Sarah Richards & Marcus Forgham was tightly contested, with Sarah & Marcus prevailing to win the first tournament completed at the club since 2019. Many congratulations to the winners. I’ve been told to make no mention of the fact that Marcus was the tournament organiser…
We hope that the Cook-Kirwan Cup will become a regular fixture in our club calendar over the winter months.
